My son told me that “all of a sudden” his Zune software would not load.  I looked at his system and checked a few things and was able to confirm that Zune.exe would start and show up in the Task Manager.  However, no sooner had it started that it stopped and was removed from the process table.  So, time to debug and diagnose.

1. Tried uninstall/reinstall of Zune software.  No luck.
2. Did step #1 again, but this time disabling CounterSpy Real-time protection.  Nothing.
3. Run Registry Mechanic 7.0 and restart.  Same thing.
4. Read other blogs, posts, forums.  A lot of other people had this issue and pointed at .NET Framework issues.  Checked my machine and everything looked OK.
5. Ran Windows Update, rebooted.  No difference.
6. Finally decided to click on “Change” for .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 in Add/Remove Programs.  This ran for a few minutes and then exited.
7. Ran Zune, and voila.  That was the trick.

Everything is up and working fine again.  For the life of me, I cannot figure out what happened or how some settings (registry, files, permisssions, ???) got mucked up in the .NET Framework 3.0 code, but it has cleared itself.
